Battalion leader Werner Gust (1944 Knight's Cross)

The next morning I go to see Sergeant NN, with whom I spent my time as a recruit in Zerbst before the war and whom I last saw in Slavyansk. As in Slavyansk, he is the first clerk in the divisional staff. He tells me that I am to be the company commander for the 12./477. My old machine gun company![3]

In the afternoon, a car from the Haarhaus regiment[4] arrives to pick us both up. The regimental headquarters is in a lonely house on the edge of a small hollow. When I arrive, I bump into Lieutenant NN, an able soldier who was still a machine gunner in my platoon during our advance towards River Don. He laughingly reminds me of the punitive guard duty I imposed on him back in Dimitrijewka for negligent guard duty.[5] He is currently the leader of the combat engineer platoon.

4 Dec 43 in the afternoon. The lieutenant with the horn-rimmed glasses stays with the regiment. I travel to my battalion in Michailowka with a catering vehicle. When I arrive, it’s already dark again. I look for the battalion command post and report there. The commander is Captain[6] Gust. I last saw him in Siderowo. At that time he was a first lieutenant and battalion commander[7], while I was subordinate to him as a sergeant with an machine gun platoon. He presented me with the infantry assault badge at the time.[8]

Gust is on his way, so I have a chat with his deputy. He tells me that I am to take over the 12th (machine gun) company, which I already knew. Then Captain Gust arrives, and his greeting is typical: short but warm. I then move into my quarters. The house is next to the battalion command post, because as the leader of the heavy weapons I have to be close to the battalion.
