I live in an annexe of the house. Here we are now spending a day of rest. It is also a Sunday and a blazing hot summer day.[6] I walk around in gym shorts. It occurs to me that I could go to the dwelling next door. I enter the house and want to go into the living room. But it is locked. Still, the gap between the door and the frame is wide enough for me to look through. I see that there is a girl in the living room. She has her back turned to me and is standing in front of a mirror, preening herself for Sunday. For the moment, however, she only has a skirt on, which leaves her whole upper body exposed. Now that she is standing in front of the mirror, I can see not only her back, but in the mirror also her breasts. She has raised her arms to arrange her hair. It is a classic pose that would appeal to any painter - and not only painters. It would be easy to run my finger through the crack of the door and lift the hook out of the eyelet. But for some unknown reason I don’t do it and - after one last look - retreat on quiet soles in a very unsoldierly manner. A short time later, as I sat reading in my living room, she came over to tell me that she was leaving and that there was no one in the other house. I suspected that she had only come to show herself off in her Sunday best. She is now wearing a pretty, colourful summer dress. She is also a sturdy, well-grown peasant girl. I admire her duly and honestly, and then she runs off. I then see her far behind hurriedly skipping across the fields to another part of the village.
