The course is finished. Today[1] is the tension-filled final examination, at which it is decided whether the senior field surgeon will grant another fourteen days of convalescent leave, or whether he will immediately write the officers “kv”[2] and send them back to the replacement battalion. He grants me another fourteen days of convalescent leave, which I spend with my parents in Friedrichshagen.

Carola shortly after the engagement
1943: The author Herbert Schrödter

During this time, Carola comes to Berlin more often. We meet in different places, go for walks, travel to Potsdam and visit Sanssouci. In the course of our encounters, heated arguments occur almost regularly. I have never argued as much as I did with my fiancée during my engagement. Carola sheds many tears and sometimes I am so enraged that I am still angry the following day when I go to the next encounter. But we kept on dating. After all, neither of us was very young anymore and we had very specific convictions and clear, firmly formed principles. Then, the adjustment to the partner and the grinding down of contrasts are often painful frictions. Carola is lively, swift, of quick decision and even quicker word, which sometimes seems hurtful to me. She has a Rhenish temperament, is very energetic and headstrong. I am slower, more deliberate, sometimes stubborn. In addition, we don’t really know each other yet. In Schandau we had seen each other for ten days. Here in Berlin and Cammin there weren’t any more. When I came back from Cammin on the evening of our engagement day and revealed to my parents that I had got engaged, they remained awkwardly silent about this completely unexpected surprise. When my father then asked after a long pause what her father’s profession was and what her financial situation was, I was stuck for an answer, because I really knew absolutely nothing about Carola’s conditions, apart from the fact that there were several children. Perhaps this was another circumstance, on top of all the others, that made me hesitate to take the decisive step towards marriage - at least at this point. But Carola pushed for a quick decision and didn’t let go. I was always evading and looking for excuses. She called me fickle and was very unhappy. Despite everything, the wedding preparations began. Carola had a female suit made and I the dress uniform, which Carola had come with me to try on once.

Oybin as seen from Mönchskanzel

The convalescent leave has expired, but I still get fourteen days of furlough. During this time I go to Oybin for three days, where my parents and grandparents also had once stayed. Here I run into Lotte. But since I am engaged now, this encounter becomes a painful disappointment for her.
