21 Mar 44. Carola was here for three days. She left again today. I took her to the station and now she's on the train on the long journey from the foothills of the Alps to the Baltic coast.

The locals are very attentive and touchingly concerned about us. Everywhere we go, we are treated favourably. Today I was in town with an air force first lieutenant. In the cafés, people willingly make room for us and offer us more cake than we are entitled to on our stamps. When we then awkwardly set off again on the street with our sticks, a gentleman picks us up and drives us back to the military hospital in his car. This willingness to help is all the more astonishing when you consider that Landshut is teeming with wounded and that this situation has lasted for several years. Even in the fifth year of the war, the tangible gratitude of the homeland for the sacrifices we make in its defence is still alive.

In the current room, apart from me, there is a first lieutenant of the Luftwaffe, with whom I was recently in the café, and an artillery lieutenant with a complicated fracture of the lower leg. He's still bedridden. A quiet, decent chap. The airman, on the other hand, is an unsympathetic piece of work who is constantly picking fights with the nuns because the habit is a thorn in his side. He is a Nazi. But he is just as persistent in harassing a 17-year-old auxiliary sister with tasteless insinuations. The good girl is just as embarrassed as we are. But here, too, it's like so often in life: The indecent ones act completely unashamedly and the decent ones remain silent.
