It is summer, after all, and summers in Russia are usually warm and dry. Nevertheless, I move into an empty foxhole, but even that is not comfortable in the long run. So I decided to move into an earth bunker that Russian field workers had built near our camp. It is spacious and has a roof made of a layer of boards with a sand cover. My messenger got a bunch of straw to cover the floor with. We now dwell here during the day. Only at lunchtime does a women’s brigade that works in the fields on the plateau gather here. They have lunch here and then come to the bunker for a short nap. The cool shelter protects them from the hot rays of the June sun. Here we all lie close together and take a midday rest. Once, the girl who was surprised by a messenger in Sagorodnoje with the commander lies next to me. The brigade leader is grumpy. Either she is angry because we occupied her bunker, or she has to be a good patriotic example to her flock against the enemy, or she really is a convinced communist.
