Position of III./477 near Losowatka; the topography at the left marking is described in the text[1]
Sketched by the author: terrain cross-section through the front

I’m standing at one of my machine gun positions and can overlook the whole front from here. Before me, a valley stretches from right to left, which gets deeper and deeper towards the left, so that the slopes also get steeper and steeper. The valley is about six hundred metres wide. Our front lines run in the same direction as the valley. We have two lines of defence here. Over on the other side of the valley - towards the enemy - runs the first line, which is occupied by the rifle companies. It is a reverse slope position, i.e. it runs behind the crest of the slope. This has the advantage that the enemy cannot see the position or fire directly at it; and the disadvantage that you can only see the enemy yourself when he comes over the crest. The second line runs along the slope on this side, and on the front edge. It is higher than the front line, so that we can see further and can also place our fire in front of their positions, overshooting the front line. However, the Russian can also see this second line. The row of hedges up here, where some of my machine gun nests are located, doesn’t provide any protection either. At best, it makes it easier for the Russians to take aim. The second line is occupied by heavy machine guns and mortars from my company and two guns from the 13th (infantry gun) company.
