We are already making another major change of position backwards. The situation is such that we are on the extreme eastern section of a huge front bulge that extends around a hundred kilometres[2] deep into the enemy front. In the north and south, the Russian is far back in our flank and is trying to cut off this huge front wedge at the base in the west and thus encircle the entire Army Group South. He has learnt that from us. To avoid this danger, we have to straighten out the front projection by gradually moving our positions back, although we are not exposed to any enemy pressure here at the eastern tip.[3]
The heavy companies of the regiment, namely the infantry gun company (13th Company) and the tank hunter company (14th Company) have already left, and one night we also disappear silently and unnoticed. We first gather at the battalion command post and then march to Krassindorf[4] where we spend the night.
