Odesa. The train runs along the shore of the huge, almost semi-circular harbour bay. Again and again we roll between long goods trains that stand on the numerous tracks and then block our view for a while. We are on the site of the Odesa goods railway station. The mighty harbour terrace rises up before us like an ancient amphitheatre. I am pushed into a Sankra, which sets off immediately afterwards. We drive through the city. The noise of the street is muffled, but I can’t see anything because of the frosted glass panes.
27 Feb 44. I am lying in the War Hospital 1/606 Odesa. My “bed” is a simple wooden bunk made of a few boards. It stands in the corner of a large hall that contains another eighty bunks. I don’t know whether all the rooms here are like this or whether this is just a makeshift quarters. The room is full and only a few nurses are taking care of it. When one of the nurses brings me food, I ask her if there are any more officers in this room or if there are special rooms for officers. I don’t even get an answer. I don’t ask any more. There is permanent commotion and a ceaseless babble of voices in the room. I’m glad that I have a bit more peace and quiet in my corner.
