My company is pulled out of the front line and as a regimental reserve transferred to the regimental command post, which is located in a hollow about two or three kilometres behind the front line.
A row of bunkers is driven into the front side slope for the commander and his adjutant, for the doctor, the chiefs of the 13th and 14th companies, for signalmen and reserves. Within a radius of several hundred metres were the 13th company's guns and limbers and a battery of 10 cm field howitzers. Three bunkers were provided for my company and me. One for me, two for the men.
A messenger from the regimental commander had just been here to fetch me to play Doppelkopf. I declined on the grounds that I couldn't play cards. That's true enough. Besides, I'm dog-tired. But "tactically" it was wrong, of course. Anyone else would have jumped at the chance to be in the company of the regimental commander, because such contacts are usually very beneficial.
It's getting colder again. Fresh snow covers the wide countryside.[1] I'm actually glad about this, because firstly the ground is solid again and secondly the snow cover gives enough light at night that you can see again.

- ↑ Since the transfer to Krivoy Rog it was rainy with 3-5°C (KTB AOK 6, NARA T-312 Roll 1485 Frame 000677 ff.); on 14 Feb 44 it began to snow (000789), on the 15th it also snowed, frost set in in the evening. The author's description gives the impression of a wide view over the country. So it was not snowing; it must be the 16th (000804). On the 17th, driving snow is reported again (000811). - The KTB LVII Pz.K., to which the 257th I.D. belonged, but whose section reached far into the lowlands, notes a thaw on the 16th (NARA T-314 Roll 1495 Frame 000042).
