Arriving home, I first pile the five pounds of butter on the kitchen table in front of my parents and then add the thick bar of chocolate. It’s a welcome extra ration for my dear parents and my holidays. In the next few days I am fully occupied with visits to relatives and acquaintances. I also had an appointment with Ruth in a Schöneberg café, which I only found after a long search in the completely blacked-out city. And then this leave, too, was over.
