Freiherr Ernst August Maximilian Josef von Gise

Freiherr Ernst August Maximilian Josef von Gise (* 17.07.1888 Schweinfurt; † 08.05.1945 bei Bernati) war Kommandeur bzw. Führer der (Divisions-) Gruppe Oberst von Gise in Kurland. Z. T. (auch im Tagebuch) findet man den Namen fälschlich "Giese" geschrieben.

Ernst Merk is said to have written in his memoirs that Gise was killed during a last Soviet push towards Libau. Some genealogical websites say he went missing and was declared dead mit Wirkung vom 08.05.1945. Considering that Jodl hat already signed the surrender and the Red Army had nothing to gain by conquering Libau one day earlier, I would assume that suicide is another possibility.

Folgende Stelle im Tagebuch bezieht sich wahrscheinlich auf ihn: "Die Gräber von Giese und Werthen (Werschem?) in Bernati von Letten gepflegt."

Der Autor kam am 21.03.1945 in diese Gegend. Das Batl unterstand also zu diesem Zeitpunnkt noch der KGr 126, die am 29.03. nach Osten verlegt wurde (Füsilier-Batl blieb offenbar da!)

    Only a few days after 20.02.1945 (the beginning of the 5th Battle of Courland), also wohl before end of February und damit lange vor dem 21.03.1945, als der Autor als Genesender zum Bataillon zurückkam, they moved to a position immediately east of Litauisches Polizeibataillon F/13 which in April and May 1945 stretched from around Peipas along the street to the wood:
  • 1. company – Cdr Ob.Lt. Herbert Schrödter, my dad – in the western half with company HQ and machine gun stronghold on islands in the bog (now dried) north of the street
    • mortar positions at the northbound street
  • 2. company – Cdr Lt. Voit – in the eastern half, already on dry land
  • (3. company – my dad’s former – had already been destroyed in the 5th Battle of Courland)
• unknown artillery unit having lost its guns (guess: A.R. 126 or parts of it??) already on dry land in thick wood or maybe adjacent/to the east of the bn’s (2nd coy’s) position and directly under Gise’s command, diary is unclear in this point

There's an autobiography available of one of the officers belonging to the divisional HQ of Gruppe von Gise (Bogg, 2002). It contains some scattered details on 'Division Oberst von Giese' as Bogg calls it. I've only glanced over the snippets available via Google Books (Link s.u.). There may be more information in the full book. According to Bogg Gruppe von Gise was also known as Kampfgruppe 130 (Bogg, p.12). Since Bogg mentions belonging to a Sicherungsregiment several times I think this was Sicherungsregiment 130. Actually the regiment was only a regimental HQ operating in the area of 18. Armee that had various minor units subordinated depending on its current task. According to Bogg (p. 12) this staff in March/April 1945 commanded the following units: Füsilierbataillon 126 (Hauptmann Hummerich) 13. Litauisches Batallion 2 Kompanien Landesschützen Their combat sector began at a swamp directly east of Lake Grobin, ran along the southern shore of Lake Grobin and stretched out till the Baltic Sea (Bogg, p.12). There's a small town Grobin/Grobina in Courland, 10 kilometers east of Libau/Liepaja. The combat sector presumably didn't reach the open sea but only the Libau lagoon which ‪seperates Libau from the mainland.

Bogg must be wrong when he writes the eastern end of the unit's frontline was near Lake Grobin. The positions of Gruppe Gise were 20 km further south. There once was a lake between Jurmalzem and Sikleszem which has been irrigated meanwhile. From there it's about 5 km to the Baltic Sea, more than enough for a unit of regimental size to defend.
