I am in Rai Gorodok at the moment and can observe from here a Russian attack which is advancing past our village, i.e. past the north side, over a wide, snowy area towards Karpovka, with the aim of advancing via this village to Slavyansk-Kurorty and penetrating the town. The attack is smashed after a short time by our artillery. The red infantry is bogged down. Only rarely one of them still dares a short leap forward. Our artillery now fires only sluggishly. From time to time a fountain of dark earth still splashes here and there from the white snow, but there is no longer a worthwhile target. Nothing stirs. The attack had begun at dawn. Now it is noon. The guys out there are going to be cold, because the thermometer still shows 28 degrees cold. Four hours later, the sun sinks below the horizon. It has become even colder. The artillery has long since ceased firing. It is getting dark and now you can see an Ivan running back here and there. There are no longer many of them. The others remain as small dark heaps in the snow. Shot or frozen to death.
This attack, together with the attack on Rai Gorodok described below and the fights at Novo Alexandrovka[4], is part of the overall Russian plan of the large-scale attack. At our sections they were beaten off, elsewhere the Russians were more successful. Altogether, our situation is not rosy.

- ↑ The author calls the place Makarowka, further below also Makejwka, and puts a question mark there as a precaution. However, there are no places with these names in the immediate vicinity. It is probably a reading error in his small-written manuscript. According to the location of the place in comparison with the situation map and the topography in comparison of the description under the 16.7.42 with the Heereskarte Russland 1:100.000, the most likely candidate is Novo Aleksandrovka. - Notable attacks took place in this area especially on 21.01. and 16.02.1942 (KTB 257. I.D., NARA T-315 Roll 1805 Frame 000033/274 ff).
