At 3am we suddenly wake up from the muffled rumble of the artillery shooting at Przemysl and Sanok. A few moments later the first German bombers hum over us in an easterly direction. The war against the Soviet Union has begun.

Morning is dawning. I went back to the barn, lay on my straw and stared at the roof. A decisive, fateful day has begun. I am not afraid at all, but there is such a dull feeling in me, which probably grips everyone who faces a future filled with danger and uncertainty. We are now waging the war on the all fronts, something which is rightly to be feared, we have opened a gigantic new front and are pushing into an infinite expanse which once upon a time brought the downfall of a Napoleon. Only the unprecedented clout of the German Wehrmacht, which has been proven so far, gives us confidence in victory.

But such thoughts occupy me only for a few moments. The events of the day soon take their toll on me. The first accounts of success of troop accustomed to victory arouse pride and confidence. The leaders of the German attack have crossed the San.

At 3am we are suddenly awoken by the dull roar of artillery fire near Przemysl und Sanok[1]. A few moments later the first German bombers drone overhead heading east. The war against the Soviet Union[2] has begun.

Dawn breaks. I have gone back into the barn and am lying on my straw mattress and staring at the roof. A decisive, fateful day has begun. I have not the slightest fear, but I do have a kind of heavy feeling that probably everyone gets at the start of a dangerous and completely unknown future. We are now fighting the rightly dreaded war on all fronts. We have opened an enormous new front and plunged into an endless expanse which even brought down a Napoleon. The only thing that gives us confidence of victory is the unmatched striking power of the German Wehrmacht, as it has proved to be so far.

But such thoughts only occupy me for a few moments. The events of the day are soon going to take over. The first reports of success from our troops who are used to winning give us pride and confidence. The spearheading German attack units have crossed the San.
