We reach the town of Buczacz. I look for a private quarters with a Jewish photographer. Here I can sleep more quietly and comfortably and still be close to my platoon. I take Unteroffizier Mielenz with me. Mielenz is a squad leader in my platoon and a proper big mouth from Neukölln.[3]
Not far from our quarters I discover a stationery store whose basement rooms are stuffed to the ceiling with books, notebooks, notepads, wall charts for school lessons, globes and pencils. Here I am in my element. I take a few notebooks and a cigar box with pencils, which I want to send home later.[4] I would have loved to take a globe with me, but it's too bulky.
In another street I discover a store, a big shop where you can buy all kinds of things: clothes, kitchen utensils, hand tools, toys and other items. The shop is closed, and in front of the entrance there is a guard from the division which captured the building and seized all the interesting objects. But he lets us in, and we take a look at the shop without taking anything with us.

He also still had some bullets, some with phosphorus tracer inserts (which I was told not to touch under any circumstances), an air force rucksack, a haversack (which I used on school trips, as a photo shows), a Russian wadded jacket as well as a field blouse and some kind of field cap, which he wore for gardening. Unfortunately, all of these items went missing in the household clearance after his death, if not before, as did probably his sports badge.
