March 47. Within the past year, 6 prisoners of war died in the camp, 2 of them of dysentery, 1 of heart attack, 1 of pneumonia, 1 frozen to death, 1 beaten to death.

The water pipe of our house, which is somewhat elevated on the slope, has frozen again. We have to fetch water from a street well at the bottom of the slope. Two of us carry the heavy buckets up the road to the camp. The road is steep, icy and slippery. We put wires diagonally across our shoulders and fasten them to the bucket handle to use them like carrying straps. They cut into the shoulders, but we couldn’t do it at all without them. After a few times of ascending and descending 200 m on icy roads with the heavy and badly portable buckets, our strength is exhausted. It is pure slave labour.
The camp elder changes. Things get a bit better. - Earnings in March: 132 roubles, in April 111 roubles. Tree trunks stolen, sawn up, sold. - Russian apprentices are trained by German prisoners of war.
About the atmosphere in the camp: The hatred. The communist camp leader who had already been put in a probation battalion during the war for some offence; the sergeant who wanted to be promoted to officer during the war and didn’t get it, and now turned into the opposite; the Landser who had been mistreated by an officer during the war; the large number of stupid people who fall for Soviet propaganda. There are many reasons: Unfair treatment, disappointment, envy. All this is now being unleashed, and the Russian is stirring it up vigorously. Although the great mass of the Landsers are friendly towards us, the relatively small group of officer-haters is enough to provoke unfriendly scenes here and there. This group is joined by the opportunists, sycophants and bootlickers who want to endear themselves to the Russians by denunciations. Churchill once said, “Put the Germans behind barbed wire and they will mangle themselves.”[2] He hit the nail on the head. We are partly to blame for many of the wretched conditions in the prison camps. Those who are so stupid, so disunited, so lacking in national pride, deserve no better. We should take an example from the proud attitude of the Japanese, English or French in captivity!
Our symbol, the somewhat limited and stupid Michel, is already correct. But a sheep with long hanging ears would not be inappropriate either.
