Being slowly starved to death is just as bad as being shot.
Even the sick are not released. Ivan has his reasons for this: 1. he has the never-to-be-returned opportunity to cheaply use millions of industrious and capable German workers. 2. with the prisoners he always has a bargaining chip in his hand for all kinds of blackmail, political demands, barter deals, etc. 3. by holding on to millions of men he prevents an increase in Germany's population for years to come. To what extent he is also harming us biologically through additives in our food, I do not know. 4. the Russians have a different sense of time anyway. A few years are a short period of time for him. 5. with every prisoner who dies here, he has destroyed a hated fascist. Perhaps even a potential enemy of tomorrow. Thousands and thousands of German prisoners died, were beaten to death and shot in the Soviet Union without the world public taking any special notice of these crimes, which were contrary to international law, and without the Soviet Union having to be answerable for them.
Rations worse again. Question and answer session with political commissar Goldberg. We were indeed entitled to Red Cross cards and rations, but there were no Red Cross cards and no rations because there was nothing. The "Swedes" were getting better rations because they had been under anti-Bolshevik propaganda in Sweden and the Soviet Union now wanted to prove to them that the claims about bad rations and treatment had been lies.
