Work in the brewery. Unfortunately, it was only for a few days and only side work. We did not get into the actual processing rooms. Only rarely did one of us manage to steal a few handfuls of processed barley, which we thought was very nutritious. A good price was paid for it in the camp. The Russians also stole, sometimes on a large scale. On 23 July 1946, for example, a load of barley destined for the brewery was black-marketed while it was still being transported.
In the camp: Russian officers eat from our products (that's what the food is called here) in our kitchen. They take bundles of vegetables from the food lorry before our eyes. - No variety in the food. Only millet for weeks, only barley for weeks, only flour soups for weeks. Even with large quantities, one is only stuffed, but not replete. - No sensible stock management. When there is a lot, a lot is given. When there is nothing, nothing is given. - Inability to plan or organise, but a master at improvising. —
The Russian could get the last out of the prisoners of war if they were treated well and skilfully. We are so obedient and industrious. But the Russian tendency to despotism, fear of sabotage, mistrust and also hatred ruin everything. It is not uncommon for prisoners of war to be beaten up by the guards or civilian overseers. They always threaten them with punishment. As a result, the prisoners of war become embittered, work less, destroy material, steal, cheat on the norms, and so on. But the prisoners of war could also put a stop to many adversities if they were in unity. But this, in turn, is prevented by German selfishness. The Germans can never be reconciled, and that has often made it easy for the Russians to dominate us.
People are constantly stealing and trafficking in things: Flour sacks, car tyres, roof slates. Russians and Plennis (corrupted abbreviation for woijenna plennij[1] = prisoner of war).
