19 Nov 45. Order of the Red Army: Officers have to take off all rank insignia and hand them in. On this occasion, they also take away all our war decorations.[1] Since the Russian had of course known about this action long before, he had us write down all the war decorations of each individual a few weeks ago, in a casual and noncommittal manner. I, however, had not indicated my close combat clasp. It was a bitter moment when we had to hand over our bravery awards, which we had earned at the risk of our lives. The Russian political officer obviously has expected greater resistance, because he gives a speech before the action begins, demands understanding and obedience, gives us hope that we would soon return home and threatens us with punishment if we do not. On the whole, not badly done and with the usual carrot and stick principle. The politruk repeats everything twice.
