25. Januar 1945
I must have slept a little after all, because I am awakened by a sudden pattering and shouting: The Russians are attacking. Outside, the 2cm quad-flak barks away. Bupp-bupp-bupp-bupp. I run out and stand next to the quad-flak. It has turned its slender barrels to the right. Over there on the right wing of the battalion, Ivan is attacking. In droves they come running over a bare, exposed hill, which then slopes gently down to our positions. Our quadflak can catch them diagonally from the side. Distance 800 metres – fire! Boupp-boupp-boupp-boupp. In rhythmic bursts the gun hammers out its shells. The tracer rounds, set at regular intervals between them, indicate the direction and position of the bursts. Now it’s hammering away over there. The Soviets tumble over each other. Boupp-boupp-boupp-boupp. Several fall at a time. Bupp-bupp-bupp. They fall and topple and collapse. It’s pelting terribly over there. Voupp - boupp-boupp-boupp. The force of the recoil shakes our gunner on his spring seat. The empty shells clatter into the net.
The Russian attack wave has now disappeared into a shallow depression. We can no longer see them from our vantage point. Apparently they have settled down after all, because no one can be seen going back. They have attacked, as so often, in such masses that even with the heaviest losses there are still enough left to continue the fight.
The Russians want to achieve success. The pressure of his attacks is strong. He hardly lets us rest. In the course of the afternoon, rumours emerge about a planned shortening of the front. Evening falls. Darkness settles over the land. Now and then a shot is fired, sometimes here, sometimes there, sometimes behind us. Apparently the Russians have infiltrated in some places.
