There’s another German and a Latvian officer in my room. The older German captain is ill. Today he is to be punctured[1], which he is in a little bit of a funk about. The hospital personnel consisted of German doctors, German and Latvian nurses and Latvian support personnel. The Latvian girl who looks after our room and brings us food has obviously taken a liking to me. She fulfils my every wish as far as she is able. As I am very hungry at the moment, she brings me a second portion after every meal. When she once sat on the edge of my bed (I think that’s forbidden), I quietly stroked her arm. Since then, she has been so noticeably around me that I refrain from any further kindness, as a precaution. That's when her affection turns and since then she’s very cool to me. It’s better that way. I’m now married after all.[2]
