Another few hours have passed. Ahead, the sun has risen and casts its rays over the choppy water. We look directly into the light. It's so glittering and glistening that you have to close your eyes. Ahead, Pillau appears. We slow down and feel our way along the coast. We will soon reach our destination. At around 11 a.m. we arrive in Gotenhafen and moor at the pier in the naval port. It took us around twelve hours to complete the journey. We say goodbye to the young naval officer with heartfelt thanks and disembark.
Gotenhafen - formerly Gdingen - lies on the western shore of the Bay of Gdansk. Originally a small fishing village, the Poles developed it into a sizeable town as a Polish rival harbour to Gdansk. My route takes me along tarmac roads past multi-storey, modern tower blocks to the Wehrmacht quarters, where I have a room assigned to me so that I can sleep until the train departs. We had travelled all night and I was tired. But I still can't sleep. Too many thoughts are swirling around in my head: the experience of the crossing, the joy of returning home, the surprise for Carola and the planning of the return to Landsberg. As the enlisted men and NCOs won't be back for a few days, we have a three to four-day head start. We three e-boat riders had therefore agreed to all meet again in Landsberg in four days.
