When I arrive in Landsberg four days later, the other comrades are also back. But the enlisted men[1] had already arrived the day before! A few days after our departure from Windau, they had followed as planned with a convoy of troop transporters. The convoy had been attacked by Soviet bombers. The ship carrying our men and 500 wounded had been hit by a bomb. The result was 30 dead and wounded. Furthermore, a fire broke out. The other ships offered their help, but the captain hoped to deal with the small fire on his own. However, the firefighting did not make much progress. The fire continued to spread and suddenly the middle deck was cut off from all connections to the main deck. The companionways were on fire. The middle deck was full of wounded, among whom panic broke out. Those who could still move tried to get on deck. A desperate battle broke out for the stairways, which were already in flames. By now, the fire had engulfed almost the entire ship. Some of the wounded had crawled through the portholes and let themselves fall into the water. The other ships, which had now rushed to the scene, fished the men out of the water. A wounded man floating in the water got caught between the sides of the ships that had gone alongside and was crushed. Another, whose upper body was in a plaster cast, had become completely trapped while trying to crawl through a porthole, while flames were already shooting out of the porthole above his head. A total of 400 wounded perished.[2] Only one of our men, a sergeant, was killed by the bomb hit. All the others returned in one piece, albeit without their caps and belts. Their luggage was burnt. A Latvian Red Cross nurse was publicly commended for her death-defying efforts in rescuing the wounded.

In the hustle and bustle of these events, nobody realised that we had arrived a day later.
