When I return to my room in the evening after a short walk through the town, there is a letter on the table. It was addressed to the OKH (Oberkommando des Heeres) in Lübben[1]. I see from an attached letter that I am to report to Lübben tomorrow morning with the letter. I go straight back to the orderly room to enquire about the purpose of the journey. As it’s already 9.30 pm, the office is already closed. So I visit the first clerk in his parlour and ask him why I have to go to Lübben so that I can prepare myself mentally. The clerk pretends not to know anything. As the conversation progresses, I ask about the contents of the letter, as it might reveal the purpose of the journey. The clerk is tight-lipped. He’s not allowed to say anything.[2] I leave again.

  1. in the original “to the OKW in Fürstenwalde”; since there was no OKW office in Fürstenwalde/Spree and the purpose of the journey (cf. 8.12.44) so suggests, it must have been the OKH, namely its personnel administration, the Heerespersonalamt, which had been located in Lübben since 1943 (NARA T-78 Roll 40 Frame 6002624 and 29)
  2. Back then, personnel files were kept secret from the people concerned.
