30. August 1944
We leave the ship in Neufahrwasser and repair to the railway station, where we board a suburban train to Danzig. I’m a bit annoyed because we had agreed with the captain that everyone would travel back to Landsberg on his own ticket. That way I could make a diversion via Cammin. But the captain makes no effort to issue our tickets. I can already see my hopes of paying Carola a surprise visit fading.
The train has just passed a U-boat shipyard. Three light grey, slender hulls lie like giant torpedoes on the launch slips.[1]
Now the captain has signed after all. I did him an injustice and quietly apologise to him. We got to know him on the transport as a calm, understanding officer. He just never said much. Now we go our separate ways. The captain is travelling to M. (Meseritz?), while the three of us want to return to Landsberg later. We had decided earlier that we would first go to our relatives and then report back to Landsberg three days later, which of course is not really permissible.
As my train doesn’t leave until the evening, I go into town with a comrade, visit the St. Mary’s Church and the Crane, stroll through some beautiful old streets with patrician houses, see a film and then go to the station. The train is jam-packed. I have to change trains on the way and here too I struggle to squeeze into the packed train.[2]

- ↑ At that time, 10 Type XXI submarines were under construction at Schichau shipyard. The author may have seen the 3 most advanced ones: U 3507-U 3509
- ↑ Unclear itinerary: The express train D 22 travelled from Gdansk (departure 22:15) without changing trains via Szczecin (arrival 4:58) to Berlin; on the route via Dirschau and Kreuz (Ostbahn) you would have had to change trains twice. Between Szczecin and Cammin, however, you always had to change trains in Wietstock.
