The general front situation must be unfavourable, because we receive orders to abandon the two villages of Mikhailovka and Frunse and to move to a rear position line. Thus the front wedge is withdrawn and we achieve a front straightening and shortening. I drive back in the car, have the new positions shown to me and then await the battalion to marshal them into the new sector. It is already dark. I stand on the wide, bare hill and wait. A VW comes rumbling along cross-country and stops in front of me. The battalion adjutant jumps out. "There you are! I’ve been looking for you for a while! The battalion is already approaching!" We go to the right side of the plateau, from where we can look down into a valley basin. Down there the battalion is already moving in. The long black columns stand out clearly against the light snow cover. The marshalling goes quickly.
And now we await the enemy to follow up. He won’t come this night yet, but we will prepare for the next night.
