Ivan seems to notice that we are firing less than our predecessors. For he becomes more intrusive again.[1] The SS division deployed here earlier was heavily armed and well supplied with ammunition. They answered every Soviet shot with a massive fire concentration. As a result, Ivan kept nicely quiet. Now his fire is coming back to life. The Russian population does not like this at all. They felt safer under the SS and were quite enthusiastic about them. It should be added that the SS were apparently given preferential treatment also in terms of food and equipment, and that the population often benefited from this abundance. Jumpers, socks, shelter halves, mess kits and other items are proof of this generosity and can be found again and again in every house.
Today I met such a typical archaic Russian peasant family in the village that I photographed them on the street. The peasant in a long Russian smock with baggy trousers and jackboots and a long white beard, the wife with the usual headscarf and barefoot, like they walk around everywhere in summer. The family set up with the children, the peasant stood at attention with his hands at the seam of his trousers, and then I snapped them.[2]
