In some cases, the date or place of the close combat days do not correspond with the official war diaries. The entries before 1945 were obviously made later. However, the total number of close combat days cannot be doubted.

The situation is impossible. The Ivan is sitting almost on our flank and looking into our soup pot from above. He has to get out of there. The very next morning we counterattack. The attacking rifle company is supported by a heavy mortar group with Sergeant Dickmann. The Soviet defensive fire is very heavy at first, but quickly fades as our soldiers reach the heights. The battle is short. The Reds withdraw. The heights are in our hands again. The casualties are very few. We have only one dead man, and even he need not have fallen if he had been more careful. He had killed a Red Army man by shooting him in the head. As he proceeded, he passed this one and went to look at his success. As he stood thus beside the dead man, an enemy bullet hit him. Shot in the head, he collapses dead.

  3. A close combat day on this date in this place is so stated in the pay book, but is doubtful, as there is no correspondence in content with the KTB 257. I.D., which reports assault guns, tanks and bombers. 22 March in Karpowka would fit better. Apparently, the days of close combat were only entered in 1945 from memory and thereby incorrectly assigned.
