I hear of a new scandal. One night there was an alarm at one of our battalions. A Russian unit is said to have broken through. A company hastily takes up position on a ridge. There they stood with 100 men waiting for the Russian. The bare heights offered no protection against the piercing wind, which blew the cold through their thin coats and into their bones. They trampled non-stop with their feet in the snow to keep them from freezing to death. So the company stood all night, but the Russian did not come. And when the company descended from the heights in the morning, 25 of the 100 men were still fit for action. The rest had suffered more or less severe frostbite.[1] A whole company became unfit for combat without a shot because there is no winter clothing yet. Here, soldiers - it is only one example of hundreds - are paying with their health for the blatant dilettantism of our political leaders. What we have received so far were cardboard waistcoats! They literally consisted of four pieces of cardboard loosely and movably sewn together with threads. When they were distributed, the feelings of the Landser ranged between scorn and rage. But the good German Michel continued to do his duty in discipline and obedience. It is a beautiful and necessary virtue that also helped to create the greatness of the Reich. Here, however, it is being overused by an incompetent leadership.
