We had hardly arrived in the small village of Yasnaya Gorka[1] when it was already drumming off again in Krassnoarmeisk. At irregular intervals, but without a break, the impacts of the shells thunder. The explosions shake the earth and make the air vibrate. We are alerted and ready to intervene. After an hour, the first Austrians come from the front. They are completely demoralised and headless. The wounded in shock and those fleeing cannot judge the situation objectively. They exaggerate. But the roar of battle in the village makes their reports of horror somewhat credible. In any case, it is clear that the Russians have made a new, furious advance and have shaken the front of the already badly battered Austrians. They begin to abandon their positions and run back along the village road. Of course, the red olbservation posts on the heights see this, direct their artillery fire onto the village road and hurl their salvos between the heaps of Austrians and civilians flooding back in haste. We take care of the wounded while the remaining Austrians run aimlessly back and forth like excited chickens. All the while they are frantically nervous and sensitive. When our lieutenant[2] in his brash manner reproached an Austrian lieutenant that the Austrians were wimpy guys, the latter threw a hysterical tantrum and wanted to shoot our lieutenant. But he coldly explained that we would show them how to do it better.
