A short time later, back in Jasło at the company, the battalion adjutant, after dinner in the casino, congratulates me on the "very proper evaluation" I received from the training course and which had just arrived.
The casino was set up in a villa next to a park. The officers and officer candidate sergeants used to have lunch here together. In addition, every Friday there was a duty dinner followed by a "cosy get-together", from which the sergeants always tried to take their leave as early as possible. We had more pleasant "get-togethers" than playing cards. I certainly did. And at that we were still lucky here in Jasło. The regimental staff had dinner together every evening, and that was duty!
I had returned from Zegiestow late in the evening on 15 December and entered my freezing room in the Piotra Skargi. Since it was too late to heat the coal stove, I was miserably cold. That night I decided to have a gas heater installed, fed by the Galician Natural Gas Works. That soon happened, and now I always have a nice warm room.
