The islands are quite well populated, particularly
those where there is the heads of the provinces, that is,
the largest cities. The smaller islands typically do not
have permanent human occupation, being the Gramelgais
Islets a Republican Nature Reserve, both above and under
the sea.

The provincial capitals are at the
same time the largest cities of the Republic. Hat Nak has
a population of nearly 340,000, Krash comes next with
close to 290,000, then comes Xai (over 180,000), Mil Fine
(102,000) and Vomite (67,000). Overall, the population is
very concentrated in the largest cities, and has
increased considerably in the end of 297 due to a massive
influx of refugees from Estontetso. Many of these
refugees are already integrated in the Melgan society,
but about half of them are in the process of returning to
their country, and the island's population is decreasing
slowly but stably.
